Things are a bit different in “Blood: The Last Vampire,” adapted from a gorgeously bright, plot-thin anime. It’s a fast-moving, gory flick with plenty of vampires and swords, but it also suffers from a cluttered storyline (what’s the point of the Elder again? ) and a predictable position twist at the ruin. Jeon Ji-hyun makes a quick-witted dhampiric anti-heroine, though.
As the movie opens, we explore a mysterious young girl, Saya (Jun), on a impart. When the lights go out, she savagely attacks a man at the other waste of the voice with a sword. Turns out he’s a “bloodsucker.”

Half-vampire Saya works for the mysterious Council, and a obedient man-in-black named Michael — but only until they secure the vampire overlord Onigen. When people open dying on an American army nefarious, she has to go undercover at the inappropriate high school. Unfortunately the general’s daughter Alice (Allison Miller) sees Saya slaughtering a couple of vampires in the school gym, and later wanders into a vampire bar. She’s as shining as a smashed lightbulb.
And some of the people working for the Council are definite to destroy anyone who interferes in their work — including Alice’s father, General McKee. Alice ends up on a desperate road lope with Saya, trying to dodge the malevolent vampires that are tracking her recent buddy. But Onigen is tracking them now, and it’s becoming very personal. Cue a Astronomical Yelp of anecdote clicheness about Onigen and Saya.
“Blood: The Last Vampire” is changed in many ways from the modern OAV, such as Saya’s background and her being a dhampir. The whole second half is basically invented by writer Chris Chow — complete with a rosy-eyed glance at Saya’s youth — while preserving the bleak, dimly-lit glance that the anime had.
Unfortunately, the first half is messy — there are too many characters (the Elder doesn’t DO anything!) and station elements (Vietnam war criticism from a VAMPIRE? ) that feel randomly inserted. Fortunately director Chris Nahon chops away all the deadwood in the latter half of the movie, and gives the visuals a surreal beauty — bleak rainy streets, misty forests, and a wuxia-style climax fleshy of fire, water, blood and floating veils.
While the first action scene almost gave me a seizure (slow-mo! Posthaste! Slow-mo! Fleet!), the splattery fight scenes become cooler later on: Saya smashing through buildings, slicing enemies apart, and dueling with a flying vampire on a rickety bridge. And the vampires are wonderfully cross — bat-winged, fanged, slimy-skinned monstrosities who splatter murky blobby blood. Also, two words: Vampire. NINJAS.
Jeon Ji-hyun/Gianna Jun is absolutely elegant in this role — she jumps, kicks, spins, slashes, and infuses her character with a sense of hollow loneliness that nothing can heal. And she plays a very different Saya in the flashbacks from four hundred years ago, when her innocence was shattered by her gain vampiric nature. Miller does a decent performance as the whiny Alison, and the elegant Koyuki does a elegant fine job as the malevolent Onigen.
“Blood: The Last Vampire” suffers from a old-fashioned first half, but it tightens up into a noteworthy more aesthetic and memorable movie in the second. If nothing else, sight it for Jeon Ji-hyun.
When the involving version of this film first came out on DVD in 2002, I bought it factual away. The animation at the time was extraordinary and blooming compared to other anime released around the same time. The only gripe I had about it was that it was short, left us with a Grand cliffhanger at the kill and many questions unanswered. For years I had been waiting for them to manufacture at least a sequel. My prayers were answered with the 50-episode series, Blood+. Instead of continuing the movie, Blood+ was revamped to fit a thicker tale and status. Needless to say, I was very elated with it.
So what was going through my mind when I saw a bootleg version of this live-action movie? “Nah, dont question too grand but objective glimpse it since you have nothing better to do today”. I’m an anime lover and infatuated with the Japanese culture as a whole, but 95% of their action movies have disappointed me, so I didnt demand mighty to inaugurate with. As soon as I popped this in and saw the first few minutes, I plan “Wow, when was this made? Early 90’s? “. As the movie went along, I noticed a number of scenes from the interesting version were integrated into the movie. I was very impressed that they did that on top of expanding on the tale and action.
The action was absolutely substantial, but you have to either bask in the anime versions or “kung-fu” movies to originate with. If you’re not into this genre, don’t bother wasting your time looking for a deep, twisting state. This is purely entertainment. Especially now that the Twilight series has taken the world by storm(at least in America), you wont get any Vampire/Horror movie with an “new” space anymore. I’m also a fan of fright movies, but the genre has become tiresome.
Bottom line: Contemplate this movie if you have somewhat interest in ANIME or KUNG-FU type films. If not, don’t slay your time.

For anyone who is a fan of ‘alien invasion’ movies, sci-fi in general, or unbiased good-old storytelling, the new ‘V’ mini-series is an absolute classic. The sage begins with the arrival of 50 big spacecraft over 50 major cities around the world; a civilization of human-like beings have advance to ask for our encourage in saving their dying planet. Over the film’s 3+ hours, our ‘visitors’ go from friend to foe, and humanity faces the prospect of enslavement by a facist regime, not unlike in World War II, this time on a world-wide scale. V was (and tranquil is) recent in its ability to weave together action and drama, along with some sci-fi elements, to fabricate a ‘morality tale’ of sorts. I must admit, there were a couple of scenes that peaceful leave me choked up. The mini-series debuted on NBC in the Spring of 1983 and was followed by an advantageous sequel, ‘The Final Battle,’ a year later. Considering the date of release, it must be mentioned that the special effects are not up to modern CGI standards – don’t arrive here expecting ‘Independence Day’, but there are some scenes that are quiet impressive, even by unusual standards. This was done serve in the day when you had to construct all your effects from scratch and there were no computers to topple abet on!
On to the DVD release of ‘V’…I must say this correct now: if you’re like me and you’ve seen V a hundred times already, you’re in for a shock when you derive a observe at this version. The colors are shining and everything is so sharply in focus…it makes my faded VHS version seem like watching t.v. with plastic-wrap over the conceal. It looks that pleasant! The audio track has been completely remastered and the majority of the effects have been enhanced. Every laser blast, every explosion, the whoosh of a passing fighter…it’s all there, loud and positive, and in Dolby Stereo. A 25 diminutive ‘behind the scenes’ documentary is included, and while it won’t assure you anything novel or horrible about V, it is bright and adds to the value of the disc. Last, but definitely not least, is the commentary track by writer/director Kenneth Johnson. This WILL snort you ‘new and shocking’ things and is definitely a major treat for those of us who are long-time fans.
I was about 9 years obsolete in the Spring of ‘83 when the current V mini-series debuted on t.v. Needless to say, V left a major impact on me, as grand as the unusual ‘Star Wars’ movie did, if not more. If you are a fan of V, you MUST hold a copy of this – it’s like seeing the indicate again for the first time. On the other hand, if you’ve never seen V before, if you can deal with its early-80’s origins, it will no doubt go you like the rest of us.

As for myself, I have one thing to say: bring on ‘The Final Battle’ DVD, I’m ready!
P.S. Oh, and one more thing…why did Jane Badler’s name never become a household word? Aside from her being devastatingly lovely, not to mention her chilling portrayal of the nasty alien leader ‘Diana’, one would have expected to perceive more of this talented actress later on in her career. There is no justice in this world!
Like many, I was a Titanic fan of both the “V” mini-series as a kid. Though even as a kid I found the dumbed-down weekly series to be sub-par, which is ironic considering I was the target demographic NBC was looking for. In rewatching the mini-series’ as an adult it’s apparent that “V: The Final Battle,” while suited, was also outrageous to Ken Johnson’s unusual. It’s a shame he wasn’t allowed to guide the further installments, “V” would probably peaceful be on the air today in some fabricate.
I wanted to certain up some of the confusion I’m seeing in these postings. First of all there is no missing footage, the mini-series is not slit in half. This DVD is exactly what it is billed as, “V – The Fresh Mini-Series.” The novel “V” was two parts which ran over two nights in 1983. It didn’t have an ending, it wasn’t really grunt to in order to negate its allegorical account. The second mini-series, “V : The Final Battle” was three parts and aired over a year later. Both mini-series’ were syndicated to UHF stations in the gradual eighties. Those stations usually ran all five parts over a week, though heavily edited. That might be what’s confusing some. Considering this DVD has sold about four times better than Warner Bros. was expecting, I’d say it’s a distinct bet “The Final Battle” will be released on DVD before too long.

As to the Gag Reel, sadly it’s not on the disc. It was supposed to be but unfortunately, Warner Bros. was unable to definite it for release. Too many of the actors wanted to be paid an additional fee for its inclusion on the disc. … unprejudiced never updated the information. Hope that helps!

As would be expected in a Frankenheimer effort, though, the action segments shine with lithe editing and Frankenheimer’s instincts for composition and camera work. The riots and chase segments make use of Rome’s cityscape, calling to mind Euro-thrillers of the period. Stone is compelling as the foolhardy photographer, with some torrid sex scenes with McCarthy. Though not on a par with The Manchurian Candidate or Seven Days in May, Year of the Gun is a decent action film that goes a long way toward capturing the political and social chaos that was ’70s Italy. –Jerry Renshaw
